While February was full of belly-warming porridge and garlic-flecked sausage ragù, March’s most popular new recipes are decidedly springier. Tell me—what are you whipping up these days? The Iconic Cookware We Just Can't Stop Collecting

Image
If there’s one object in my kitchen that gets more oohs and aahs than anything else in the room, it’s my Dansk Købenstyle butter warmer. A small-scale saucepan in a warm shade of plum, it never leaves my stove except to get washed. Lest you think it serves aesthetic purposes alone, let me underline the fact that I use it every single day—no, multiple times a day. It is quite simply the prettiest little workhorse I’ve owned. Dansk has been a familiar brand to me for a while; before I bought my first piece I'd seen pepper mills and trays in the homes of friends, and fawned over casseroles and silverware in vintage stores. The name Købenstyle, however, was less familiar to me. If you, like me, first heard the word and thought of København, you wouldn’t be remiss—these distinctive pots and pans were designed by Copenhagen-born sculptor and designer Jens Quistgaard. The Easiest Trick to Save Your Leftover Smoothie

Image
During the pandemic, everyone seemed to cycle through new routines: baking sourdough bread, getting together with old friends for virtual happy hours, or falling in love with a new at-home workout. I started habitually drinking smoothies at least once a day. I found myself completely reenergized after polishing off a pint glass filled with blended dragon fruit, bananas, peaches, pineapple, and mixed berries. My newfound ability to power through any sign of an afternoon slump was accompanied by an overzealous hand in the kitchen. I went from carefully measuring each type of frozen fruit before adding it to the blender to eyeballing everything. I lost my practiced touch and ultimately dumped the excess smoothie down the drain day after day…that is, until I was scrolling through Instagram one night and watched a story posted by my colleague, Food52's Associate Editor Caroline Mullen. She had whipped up a green smoothie earlier in the day and poured the leftovers into a silicone ice

How to Get Rid of Gnats, Once and For All

Image
Gnats are the bane of my existence. They invade my home at least once a year it’s because I left an overripe banana at the bottom of the fruit bowl, didn’t clean out the garbage disposal well enough, or even just brought home a new plant that had them hiding in the soil. Then I'm forced to spend the next few weeks trying to banish them from every nook and cranny of my home. In the grand scheme of things, gnats are harmless—common fruit flies and fungus gnats don’t bite (though some varieties do), but they always seem to be hovering in your face or flying around your food. If you’re sick of seeing these little bugs all around your home, here are some tried-and-true methods to get rid of them, as well as ways you can prevent them from coming back. Our Favorite Charoset is from the Biggest Jewish Deli in Texas

Image
Every year, in the days leading up to Passover, Ziggy Gruber makes up to 1,500 pounds of charoset. For comparison, my mom will make no more than a pound of the chopped fruit and nut mix, and there will be some left over. But when has Gruber ever done anything on a small scale? David, who goes by Ziggy, is a third-generation deli man. His grandfather, Max, arrived in New York via Budapest at the turn of the century. He found work in delis across the city until 1927 when he opened his own, the Rialto Deli, with his brothers-in-law. The Rialto, they claim, was the first deli to open its doors on Broadway, just two years before the start of the Great Depression. Amidst the anguish of the era, the Rialto thrived, serving the likes of Ethel Merman and the Marx brothers. All three of them. Decades later, Ziggy’s father opened his own deli, on Madison Avenue and called it Genard’s. Once Ziggy came around, the family had moved, shuttered its prospects in the city, and opened a deli in decide

My Favorite Kitchen Tool Has Nothing to Do With Food

Image
Every six weeks (or so it seems) on Twitter there is an argument about whether you should leave your shoes on when you enter your home or take them off. Both sides staunchly believe they are right. My answer: Both. Yes, I always take off my shoes when I come into the house. And yes, I also wear shoes in the house. (Just call me Mister Rogers, I guess?) Indoor shoes are a very specific genre. And the most important of them: kitchen shoes. How Much Brisket Do I Need Per Person?

Image
If you want to know how much brisket you need to serve per person, you first need to watch Mean Girls (or, if you’re a woman between the ages of 25 and 35, re-watch for the 100th time). The answer lies with the protagonist character Cady Heron, played by Lindsey Lohan, who will tell you “the limit does not exist.” I understand this doesn’t help you determine how many pounds of raw brisket to purchase from the butcher before Passover or Rosh Hashanah. But it’s true. If your brisket is fork-tender and flavorful beyond belief, people will keep going back for more. And even when they retire from the dinner table to the couch and change from fancy clothes to sweatpants, a few people will obviously be craving leftover brisket within (checks watch) 90 minutes. But yes, we do have a handy way of estimating how much you should allot per person if your budget is not infinite. From Our Shop our line! Five Two Essential Roasting Pan & Rack $149 More

How to Bring the French Countryside to Your Kitchen

Image
Skirted sinks, patinated pots, chippy cabinetry—classic French kitchens are somehow both effortlessly beautiful and perfectly practical at the same time. But getting the right mix of high and low, new and old, and traditional patterns and colors takes more effort than meets the eye. Laurie Furber, the co-founder of the Bay Area French antique shop Elsie Green says, “When I think of a traditional French kitchen, I think of function. My French friends have their Le Creuset, copper, and cast iron passed down through generations, and [they] keep wood, enamel and silver spoons within easy reach for cooking and tasting.” Read More >> http://dlvr.it/SMZkNx

I Tried 12 Grocery Store Earl Grey Teas to Find the Best One

Image
Pre-pandemic, coffee shops were basically my office. I’d sit at a corner table with an Earl Grey tea like I owned the joint—essentially becoming the classic, fictional mob boss who takes meetings in the back booth of an Italian restaurant. The only difference was that I did a little more “drinking tea,” and slightly less “murdering all my enemies.” But other than that, totally the same. I’ve spent so much time buying Earl Grey tea at coffee shops that it’s embarrassing. Ellen Degeneres once made fun of me, specifically, for doing so. And when you’re called out for your tea obsession on national television, you know you’re pretty far gone. Read More >> http://dlvr.it/SMWrBw

The Ultimate Step-by-Step Guide to a Clean Stove

Image
Even if you’re not a huge home cook, it’s likely that your stove sees quite a bit of action in the way of Stuck. On. Crud. Even something as simple as boiling pasta water often leaves streaks and marks (you know those salty little droplets that dry white?), and heating up a pot of pre-made soup is sure to leave a couple splatters. And if you’re actually often in the kitchen? Well, your stove top is really in for it. A splotch of tomato sauce from Monday, charred spinach from Tuesday, burnt bits of rice from Wednesday—before you know it, your burners, stove top, and knobs are slick with grease and coated with crumbs. Not only is this unappealing, but it can become a hazard when leftover bits find their way over to the flame or electric coal, Read More >> http://dlvr.it/SMWHhz

The Essential Spring Care Guide for Your Houseplants

Image
Potted greenery is the perfect way to connect with nature when spending time indoors—my own green roommates have been wonderful company through the winter. Now that spring is here, it’s the best time to tend to your botanical buddie—whether you’ve got a few or 100—before making a break for the actual outdoors. While proper watering and correct sun exposure are your first priorities when bringing home a plant, there are a few other ways to ensure that your plants continue to grow and thrive through the seasons: soil health, pest inspections, and even a little leaf management are all important habits to add to your seasonal care routines. I know that tackling a huge to-do list, when all you want to do is head outdoors, can seem daunting, especially if your plants are in the multiples. Try carving out the time to make these tasks enjoyable—break them up into bite-sized goals that you can tend to realistically throughout the week, rather than in one fully loaded day. Snacks Have Lost Their Damn Minds

Image
It was the spring, of 2021 and Avi Bonnerjee, a 35-year-old Brooklyn resident, was shopping for groceries. While perusing the pasta shelves, something caught his eye: Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Mac ’N Cheese. “The package had a very cool cheetah on it, which seemed like a weird way to sell macaroni and cheese, or any food. And it was bright red, with Guy Fieri–style imagery of flames,” he recalls. “I felt compelled to buy it.” Read More >> http://dlvr.it/SMNcTk

How to Light a Charcoal Grill for Smoky, Summery Flavor

Image
The start of summer is not defined by when the weather reaches a certain temperature or when school is no longer in session. It’s not entirely about when lines start forming at the ice cream truck or when community pools open up. It’s when I can walk around my neighborhood (because yes, the weather has reached a pleasant temperature) and I can smell the aroma of a charcoal grill in the air. Yes, starting a charcoal grill is a little bit more challenging and time-consuming than using a gas grill. But I firmly believe that the final flavor is so much better. You simply can’t replicate the charred, smoky flavor of charcoal from gas. Here’s exactly how to start a charcoal grill so that you too can enjoy the best burgers, kebabs, and salmon fillets all summer long.
